8. Idea of God not innate (aka more confusion)

"...since it is hard to conceive how there should be innate morals principles without an innate idea of a deity." This is a true statement but that doesn't signify that god exists. I don't sell drugs because the law says it's illegal andI'll go to jail. This isn't innate, through my lifelong learning experiences, the law told me it was illegal. But now I'm confused because I thought Locke believed that God is not innate when he just inferred that he is innate.

True...but I read the same portion you read in Book I and although this one sentence contradicts Locke's belief, Locke clearly states he believes God is not innate. Basially he says he understands how some people may think God is an innnate idea, but it is not. I have a post in Group 8 on the same section that this quote is in..so you can check it out to clear the confusion

it really makes sense to look at a religion from a scientific and sociological standpoint. if people thought that there would be no eternal consequences or rewards for their actions, i truly believe the world would be a horrible place filled with chaos. if you knew that you ojly hadanother 50 years to live, wouldnt you go crazy and do everything you want, especially if you knew there would be no afterlife to makeup for overdue karma? if anything, we need religion to create a stable and safe society, which many people say is the reason it was created in the first place.
