He believes that birds have no idea how to retain or repeat song. However, that is exactly how most birds will learn to sing. By listening to the birds around them and repeat it as well as they can. Some birds even pick up new notes and add them year after year. He also says that it is a mechanism for self preservation and protection, the song is actually a sign to female birds of how "fit" the male bird is and how good its genes may be.
